OFFER TO LEASE A PALM-GROVE

To Flavia Petronilla also called Titanias with her guardian her husband Gaius Valerius Pansa, ex-gymnasiarch, from Kan.ereus and Heries his brother. We desire to lease from you the palm-grove called that of Herennius belonging to you in the area of the village of Hephaestias at a total rental of 1000 silver drachmas and a special payment of 2 artabae of dates on single stems, measured by the dromos date-measure of the village, and of 12 salotia. And I will pay you the rent at the time of the plucking without delay. I, the lessee, shall be responsible for all the works, plucking, fertilization, irrigation, formation of basins, a third share of embanking canals and a half share of cleansing them. I will pay also 2 artabae of sabautia. {Signed} I, Gaius Valerius Pansa, have let it on the above terms, and so long as no one makes a higher bid, you shall retain possession of the aforesaid lease. {Dated} The 17th year of Lucius Septimius Severus Pius Pertinax Arabicus Adiabenicus and Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius, Augusti, and Publius Septimius Geta Caesar Augustus, Thoth 17.
