DIVISION OF PROPERTY IN SLAVES

Date: A.D. 47.

The 7th year of Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus Imperator, the 29th of the month Xandicus, at Tebtunis in the division of Polemon in the Arsinoite nome. Haruotes, aged about 35 years, with a scar below the left jaw, and Cronion, aged about 30 years, with a scar on the left forearm, and Haruotes the younger also called Arabarches, aged about 27 years, with a scar above the left eyebrow, all three sons of Herodion, mutually acknowledge that they have divided between themselves, as consenting parties here and now to the division, from the present day for all time the four slaves belonging to them by inheritance from their father, Thermoutharion and Sambous and Beraclas and limping Heraclous, on the basis that Haruotes the elder has obtained for the portion falling to him Sambous with the future slave children who may be born of her, and Cronion likewise has obtained for the portion falling to him the aforesaid Heraclas, and Haruotes the younger also called Arabarches has likewise obtained for the portion falling to him Thermoutharion and limping Heraclous with the future slave children who may be born of them, but that the mother of the acknowledging parties, Taorseus daughter of Haruotes, shall retain the service of the aforesaid slave Thermoutharion, devised to her by the acknowledging parties' father, for as long as Taorseus survives. Each of the acknowledging parties therefore and their assigns and successors shall possess and be masters of the portions which they have obtained from the present day for all time without dispute, and none of the acknowledging parties shall lay claim in any manner to what has been allotted to another. If any of the acknowledging parties violates any of the above provisions, the one who infringes them shall forfeit to the one who observes them both the damages and the expenses doubled and a penalty of 1500 silver drachmae and to the Treasury the like sum, and the agreement about the property shall none the less hold good, as made with their voluntary concurrence on every point. Autograph subscription of the three persons mentioned: {Signed} I, Haruotes son of Herodion, am a party to the division made at this present time and have obtained for the portion falling to me the aforesaid slave Sambous and I will do everything as stated above. I, Cronion son of Herodion, am a party to the division made at this present time and have obtained for the portion falling to me the aforesaid slave Heraclas and I will do everything as stated above. I, Haruotes the younger also called Arabarches son of Herodion, am a party to the division made at this present time and have obtained for the portion falling to me the aforesaid two slaves Thermoutharion and limping Heraclous and I will do everything as stated above.
