CONCERNING THE WATER SUPPLY OF A MUNICIPALITY

To Demetrius, ex-gymnasiarch, auditor, from Crispus also called Sarapion, Mysthes also called Ptolemaeus son of Ptolemaeus, Mysthes son of Didymus acting through his father, and Sotas son of Zoilus, all four overseers of the supply of water for the reservoirs and fountains of the metropolis. Account of receipts and expenses of the water supply from Pachon of the past 16th year of Trajanus Caesar the lord to Phaophi 30 of the current 17th year.

Receipts : ... For supplying water for the Severian baths at 18 obols per day : Pachon, 72 drachmas 18 obols ; Pauni, 72 drachmas 18 obols ; Epeiph, 72 drachmas 18 obols ; Mesore, from the 1st to the 15th, because from the 16th to the 30th there had been no bathing, instead of the normal 36 drachmas 9 obols, a sum of 52 drachmas ; for the 5 intercalary days 12 drachmas 3 obols ; 17th year, Thoth, 72 drachmas 18 obols ; Phaophi, 72 drachmas 18 obols ; total 424 drachmas 93 obols. For the Dromos fountain at 9 obols per day : Pachon, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; Pauni 36 drachmas 9 obols ; Epeiph, for 27 days the corresponding 33 drachmas 4 obols ; Mesore, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; and for the 5 intercalary days 45 obols ; total 141 drachmas 76 obols. . . . For the Cleopatreum fountain likewise at 9 obols per day : Pachon, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; Pauni, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; Epeiph, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; Mesore, 20 drachmas and the surplus 14 drachmas 5 obols paid for the Severian baths in the same month ; for 4 intercalary days 5 drachmas ; 17th year, for only 29 days of Thoth, because on one day no water was supplied, 36 drachmas ; Phaophi, 36 drachmas 9 obols ; total 205 drachmas 36 obols. For the Serapeum beer-shop at 13 obols per day : Pachon, 52 drachmas 13 obols ; Pauni, 52 drachmas 13 obols ; Epeiph, 52 drachmas 13 obols ; Mesore, 52 drachmas 5 obols out of 52 drachmas 13 obols owing to our having struck out the remaining 8 obols on account of a stoppage (?) in bringing water, the shop having provided for itself; for 5 intercalary days, 9 drachmas ; 17th year, Thoth, 52 drachmas 13 obols ; Phaophi, for 24 days (?), 44 drachmas, because no water was supplied for the remaining days ; total 313 drachmas 70 obols. From the rulers of the synagogue of Theban Jews at 128 drachmas per month: Pachon, 128 drachmas ; Pauni, 128 drachmas ; Epeiph, 128 drachmas ; Mesore, 128 drachmas ; 17th year, Thoth, 128 drachmas ; Phaophi, 128 drachmas ; total 768 drachmas. For the place of prayer likewise: Pachon, 128 drachmas; Pauni, 128 drachmas ; Epeiph, 128 drachmas ; Mesore, 128 drachmas ; 17th year, Thoth, 128 drachmas ; Phaophi, 128 drachmas ; total 768 drachmas. Total of receipts from Pachon 1 to Phaophi 30 [of the 17th year] of Trajanus Caesar the lord: 1 talent of silver 5900 drachmas 6 obols.

From this the following sums have been spent. For the reservoir of the Grove, having 16 shadufs worked each by 11/2 men (per day) who draw up water from morning till evening : 16th year of Trajanus Caesar the lord, Pachon : to Aphrodisius, hirer of the water-drawers, as his own wage for Pachon, 40 drachmas, and to distribute to the water-drawers from the 1st to the 30th, comprising 797 men at the reservoir and the machine (?) of the canal and 320 night-workmen likewise, making altogether 1103 men, at a wage of 40 drachmas for 30 men, 1470 drachmas, and to distribute to the labourers employed on the Archimedean screws, comprising 200 men, at the rate of 10 obols each, 2000 obols, equal to 276 drachmas, and as the price of oil burned in lamps for the night-workmen 12 drachmas 2 obols, and as the price of earthenware buckets 1 drachma, total for the month 1799 drachmas 2 obols. . . . Wage of the ox-drivers for the reservoir of the Grove, which employs 2 waterwheels and 6 drivers ; Pachon, to Petecus son of Patunis, herdsman, as wage for Pachon, 32 drachmas, and to 6 ox-drivers likewise for Pachon, 3 at 16 drachmas each, 48 drachmas, other 2 at 14 drachmas each, 28 drachmas, another 1, 24 drachmas, total for the month 132 drachmas. . . .
