Dittenberger dated these decrees to the time of the Social War, arguing that the Aetolians appointed governors of Delphi only when the city was under threat of attack. But it is now agreed that Archelaos was archon of Delphi at a later time, which places the date of these decrees close to the other surviving decrees in honour of Aetolian governors ( see Syll_553a ).
[A] Gods. In the year when Archelaos was archon, and the members of the council were Tarantinos, Glaukos, Babylos, Orthaios and Nikodamos, it was resolved by the city of Delphi in full assembly, with the customary votes: since Pantaleon of Arsinoē, the son of Neon, in previous times showed continual goodwill towards our city, and now, after being appointed by the Aetolians to be superintendent of the temple and the city, he has maintained the temple and the city piously and honourably; and his conduct towards the citizens has been good and seemly; and he has further increased the existing goodwill between ourselves and the Aetolians; therefore it is resolved to praise Pantaleon of Arsinoē, the son of Neon, on account of his piety and his good conduct towards the temple and the city; to make him and his descendants proxenoi of the city; and to grant to him and his descendants priority in consulting the oracle, inviolability, freedom from taxes, privileged seating at all the games that the city holds, and the other rights which are granted to other proxenoi and benefactors of the temple and the city; and to grant to him and his descendants grazing rights in the territory of Delphi, for all time.
