The epithet Hegemonios {'Leader'} applied to Hermes is said to have been in use since since at least the early fourth century B.C., and it was particularly appropriate for dedications by generals, but the only other surviving occurrence at Athens, apart from here, seems to be in an inscription of 331/0 B.C.
