William Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology was published in 1850. It is the most comprehensive reference work of its kind in the English language, with a huge number of biographies of Greeks and Romans, both the famous and the obscure. Inevitably, some of the entries have become out of date as a result of more recent discoveries, but it remains an invaluable source of information about Greek and Roman history and literature.
