Some words in lines 11 and 12 of this inscription were deliberately erased, probably in 199 B.C., when Athens was at war with the Macedonians and all references to their kings were removed from public documents.
[A] Muses. In the year of Kallimedes as archon, in the ninth prytany of the Aiantis tribe, with Kallias of Plotheia, the son of Kalliades, acting as secretary, on the 21st day of the month of Elaphebolion, which was the 29th day of the prytany, in assembly at the theatre of Dionysos; Charias of Pelekes, the son of Heniochos, and the other presidents put it to the vote on behalf of the presidents; it was resolved by the people, as proposed by Neoptolemos of Deiradiotai, the son of Phileas: concerning the report that the agonothete has made about the sacrifices, which he performed to Dionysos and the other gods as is customary, with good fortune it is resolved by the people to accept the good omens that were indicated by the sacrifices, which he performed for the health and safety 10 of the council and the Athenian people together with their wives and children [and of king Antigonos . . . ] since the agonothete has shown great regard for piety towards the gods, and has demonstrated his goodwill and honourable conduct towards the Athenian people, and has performed all the traditional sacrifices at the appropriate times in a fine and pious fashion, and completed the pre-contests {proagones} in the temples as is customary, and took care of the festival of Dionysos and the other matters in a fine and honourable fashion; therefore to praise the agonothete Agathaios [of Prospalta], the son of Autokleēs, on account of his piety towards the gods and his honourable conduct towards the council and people of the Athenians; 20 and when he gives an account of his conduct in office, as is customary, the people may judge him worthy of whatever he deserves. The secretary of the prytany shall inscribe this decree on a stone stele and place it in [the precinct of Dionysos], and the treasurer shall provide the necessary funds for the making and fitting of the inscription.
[B] In the year of Thersilochos as archon, in the [ninth prytany of the] . . . tribe, with Diodotos of Phrearrhioi, the son of Diognetos, acting as secretary, on the 21st day day of [Elaphebolion], which was the 24th day of the prytany, [in assembly at the theatre of Dionysos]; Cha... of Oē . . . and the other presidents put it to the vote on behalf of the presidents; 30 it was resolved by the people, as proposed by Dionysios . . . : since [Agathaios] in all the other commissions which the council and the people voted to him . . . worthily of the responsibility voted to him by the people . . . being agonothete . . .
