Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum: 1021

LISTS OF OFFICIALS AT OLYMPIA

These are two examples of a series of inscriptions, which show how worship was carefully organised in the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia during the four years before each Olympic Games. The background to the inscriptions is described in great detail by S.B. Zoumbaki, "Elis und Olympia in der Kaiserzeit" ( PDF ).

Inscription B (not included in Sylloge³) shows that the order and titles of the officials varied from one inscription to another. There are a few examples (for instance, among the custodians) of men who held the same post across both periods, but generally the names are different.

The proper names in the lists are usually followed by one of 16 symbols (either a single letter or a digraph), whose exact significance is uncertain.

[A]   Sacred to Zeus. These men served in the intervening period before the 189th Olympiad.

[B]   . . .
