LETTER TO NESMIN

Text:   P. MAIL 2   { Missione Archeologica Italiana a Luxor }
Provenance:     Al-'Assasif   ( TT 37 )
Date:   c. 150 B.C.
Language:   Demotic
Translated by:   R. Jasnow
Format:   see key to translations

The writer of this letter is insistent in his demands for the recipient to send him more news, but because the letter does not record his status, it is unclear whether this is in an official capacity.   The translation is taken from R. Jasnow, "Why Haven't You Called? :   A Demotic Letter from the Tomb of Harwa" ( Google Books).

[recto] For Ns-Mn, son of Pȝ-ti-Ỉmn-nswt-tȝ.wy ;   since I have been far from you (?), the ships have come to Kom Ombo (?) two times, but you have not written to me of your health, and the health of Pȝ-wrm, and the health of Pȝ-ti-Ỉmn-nswt-tȝ.wy and Brḥm until today. Do not delay to write to me of your health and the health of every man with you! [If it happens that Pȝ-sḥn (?) comes to Kom Ombo (?), do not let him come, without silver (?) being there with him! Do not let him come away, to the land, there being anything in the world which you wish (?), you not having confirmed it with him. Do not let him ignore it! If you need anything of his (?) here, confirm it you yourselves.

[verso] Do not be great of heart therein also (?)! Do not place a thing on the ground {i.e., ignore} before you come to Kom Ombo. Come to me (?) today, the 2 men (?). [If] it happens that there is anything here, write to me about it!

Written by ... son of Pȝ-tỈ-ẖnm, day 11.

{ Address }   To Ns-Mn.
