There were several ancient cities called Apollonia, but judging from the names of the envoys the city in this inscription was probably Apollonia Salbake, a city in eastern Caria to the north-west of Kibyra. There is insufficient evidence to place the treaty in its exact historical context.
. . . Theophilos son of Theophilos the son of . . . . . . and the secretary Polites . . .
. . . [since] the Apollonians, who are our friends and [well-disposed towards us and] . . . [and] kinsmen and fellow-sacrificers, having equal citizen rights {isopolitai}, from the time of the [ancestors of the] people, have sent a decree and envoys - namely Marsyas son of Polites and Dionysios son of Iatrokles - concerning a treaty; 10 and they have urged us to make a treaty in agreement about an alliance, [so that] the alliance may exist between the cities for all time; therefore this has been agreed by the treaty-writers {synthēkographoi} [sent?] by the Kibyrans - namely Ponaslēmes son of Papes the son of . . . son of Ponaslēmes, Papes son of Moagetes the son of Papes son of Orglos, Hieron son of Morkidas the son of Daittis son of Silamoas, and their secretary Kiddounis son of Pigōllis [the son of] . . . son of Pigōllis - together with the treaty-writers sent [by] the people of Apollonia - namely Marsyas son of Polites and Dionysios son of Iatrokles.
With good fortune: the Kibyrans and [the Apollonians] shall have the honours and privileges handed down from their ancestors . . . [and] their alliance with each other shall remain firmly 20 . . . [for all time] . . . [the people] shall reckon [the same] enemies and the same friends; and if [anyone . . . attacks the city or the territory] of the Apollonians or [abolishes] their democracy . . . the people of Kibyra [shall come to the aid of the Apollonians] . . .
