FROM AMMONIUS TO JULIUS AND HILARUS

Original text: POxy 1681
Date: 3rd cent. A.D.

Ammonius to his brothers Julius and Hilarus very many greetings. Perhaps, brothers, you think me a sort of barbarian or inhuman Egyptian. But I beg you not to be of this mind, because first you have to some degree had proof of my sentiments, and also many things urged me to visit my family, first the fact that I had not seen them for a year and next my desire to leave Egypt before winter. I hope then in three days' time to come to you myself and tell you my news. Salute my sister Hieronis with Julius her husband and Isidora (?) with her. {Addressed} Deliver to my brothers Julius and Hilarus from Ammonius.
