DELPHI AND TANAGRA HONOUR MARCELLUS

Greek text:   (B) IG_7.571
Date:     24/3 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

These statues, naming Marcellus as 'patron', were probably dedicated to Augustus' nephew, in the last year of his life, when he came to be regarded as a likely successor to Augustus. But other identifications have been suggested; see S. Dmitriev, "The Greek Slogan of Freedom and Early Roman Politics in Greece", p. 444 ( Google Books ).

[A]   The city of Delphi honours Claudius Marcellus, its patron.

[B]   The council [and the] people { of Tanagra } honour Marcus [Claudius] Marcellus, son of . . ., their patron, on account of his virtue and goodwill.
