PTOLEMAIOS PERFORMS AN OBEISANCE TO ISIS AT PHILAI

Greek text:   Philae_59
Date:   73 or 44 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

A record of obeisance at Philai such as this is unlikely to be earlier than the first century B.C.; therefore there are two possible dates for it, either March 73 or March 44 B.C.   Dittenberger preferred the earlier date.

The standard study of obeisance {proskynēma} in Egypt is "Ricerche sul Proskynema" by G.Geraci ( 1971 - JSTOR ).

I, Ptolemaios son of Dionysios, the kinsman and strategos of the small Diopolite nome, have come and performed an obeisance to the very great goddess, the Saviour lady Isis, on behalf of my children and those who love me. In the 8th year, on the 8th day of Phamenoth.
