EPITAPH OF SENESIS

Text:   Copenhagen AEIN 635   [ TM 47600 ]
Provenance:   Panopolis   ( Akhmim )
Date:   330-150 B.C.
Script:   Hieroglyphic
Translated by:   A. Farid
Format:   see key to translations

It seems strange that this inscription mentions the names of four deceased persons, without explicitly stating their relationship with each other. A. Farid explains it as follows.   The inscription is primarily an epitaph for Senesis. After her first husband died, Senesis married again. Phatres was her first husband; Taesis was her daughter by her second husband; and Horensa was her son by her first husband.

The translation has been adapted from A. Farid, "Zwei demotischen Stelen", no. II ( BIFAO 87 ). There is a French translation by O. Koefoed-Petersen, "Les stèles égyptiennes", no. 79 ( PDF ).
