Nicolaus was a philosopher and historian, who lived in the first century B.C. He was an adviser to Herod the Great, and a friend of the emperor Augustus, whom he met in Rome on several occasions - see the note on Nicolaus and Augustus. Nicolaus wrote extensively, and excerpts have survived from some of his books.
