Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum: 511

NAMES OF AETOLIAN WOMEN ON A MONUMENT AT DELPHI

Greek text:   FD_3.1.575
Date:     270-230 B.C.

Inscriptions show that some Aetolian women had a prominent public role. These three women are sometimes described by modern writers as 'heroines' (perhaps from the war against the Gauls), but there is no proof of that; see C.Antonetti, "Les Étoliens: image et religion", pp.129-130 ( Google Books ).

Lanassa   Aristonoa   Damaina

{There are traces of three female statues on the monument; the women were probably residents of Naupaktos in Aetolia.}
