In erecting this statue of an Aetolian, Eretria seems to be acting as an autonomous city, free from Macedonian control. It is generally assumed that the Macedonians captured Eretria early in the Chremonidean War. But this is not certain; see J.Gabbert, "Antigonus II Gonatas: A Political Biography", page 39 ( Google Books ). For another inscription in honour of Neoptolemos son of Physkos, see Syll_412 .
The city of the Eretrians dedicates this statue of Neoptolemos of Aetolia, son of Physkos, to Pythian Apollo.
