MYSTERIES OF OSIRIS AT DENDERA

The main temple at Dendera was dedicated to Hathor; but there was also a richly decorated chapel of Osiris. On the walls of this chapel there were inscribed a series of texts about the secret rites of Osiris; these had been extracted from much more ancient texts, some of them dating back to the Middle Kingdom.

It is reasonable to assume that the inscription was made during the reign of Cleopatra VII, who was responsible for much of the building work at Dendera; a more accurate date, based on the theory that the famous Dendera Zodiac recorded an eclipse that took place in 51 B.C., is very uncertain.

This translation has been adapted from S. Cauville, "Le temple de Dendara: les chapelles osiriennes"; pp.14-28, whose translation was in its turn closely based on the previous French translation by E. Chassinat (1966). The inscription contains seven sections; the longest section (E) is not translated here.

An illustrated summary of the inscription was provided by E.A. Wallis Budge, "Osiris and the Egyptian Resurrection", chapter 15; this was written over a hundred years ago, but it is still helpful.



[A]

The great Prince of the hidden [house] at Coptos is made by work in the garden-tank of the Sanctuary of Shentayt {= Isis?} with barley and sand, and the shred of the relics is made using the basin of the shred and similarly with barley and sand.

Osiris who presides over the Abaton at Elephantine is made by work in the garden-tank, inside the Temple of Gold . . . the great Princess and sand from the Abaton's pool, and the shred is made using the double basin, in the same way as are the parts of the Khenti-Amenti, with barley and sand.

Osiris of Naref who presides over the living people at Heracleopolis is made by mysterious work using the venerable vessel, and its Khenti-Amenti is made with [barley and sand], and its shred is made in the double basin, with earth from Letopolis, and with barley and sand, in the same way as the Khenti-Amenti, in all matters.

Osiris, He Who Decisively Strikes the Bull, who presides over the Lycopolite nome, is made by mysterious work using the venerable vessel, and . . . divine (?) liquid with barley and sand, and its shred likewise.

The Great Prince of Heliopolis in the Heliopolite nome is made with barley and sand 5 [from the body of water at the mouth of the ỉty-canal, and the shreds of the relics are made in the double basin, with earth from Letopolis, barley, and sand, as is done for the Great Prince of Heliopolis.

The Great God who is in the necropolis at Diospolis Parva is made by mysterious work in the Hidden House [using] the venerable vessel, as is the Khenti-Amenti of this god, with . . . barley and sand, according to the practice that has been [said] concerning them for Busiris. No shred of this god is placed in the relic basin, made like the Khenti-Amenti with barley and sand. Instead, a representation is made with perfect qefen loaves and fragrant aromatic substances, with its base composed of two heben of spices.

Osiris Sepa at Letopolis is made by work in the garden-tank of the Khenti-Amenti with barley and sand, and the shred of the relics of the double basin is made in the Place of Fabrication with the aid of the basin of the shred, with barley and sand.

Osiris who presides over the Sanctuary of the Luminous One, in the Saite nome, is made by mysterious work with [earth (?)] mixed with frankincense and sprinkled with grains. of barley, in all its parts . . . . . .

Osiris, the Abundant One who fills his land, who presides over Hermopolis Parva, is made by work in the garden-tank of Khenti-Amenti with barley and sand, and his shred is made by means of the basin of the shred, in the same way.

Osiris the Great Black Bull, in the Athribite nome, during the great mystery of the Festival of Digging the Earth, is made using the venerable vessel 10 of the great god in the necropolis and his Khenti-Amenti, with barley and sand, and his shred is made with the aid of the basin of the shred, in the same way as the Khenti-Amenti in all its parts, at the festival of the One Who Awakens Well.

Khenti-Amenti, the Osiris of the Prosopite nome, is made by work in the garden-tank of Osiris who presides over the Temple of Gold, with barley and sand. As for the divine relic, its shred is made using the basin of the shred, in the same way as the Khenti-Amenti, with barley and sand.

Osiris who presides over the embalming workshop, the great god, the master of Imau, is made in the garden-tank of the Sanctuary of Shentayt, during the Festival of Digging the Earth; he is made with barley and sand, and the double basin (?) that contains the divine relic as a shred is made with earth from Letopolis, barley, and sand, in the same way as the Khenti-Amenti.

Osiris who presides over the Temple of the Prince, the Great One in the Divine, is made by work in the garden-tank of the Khenti-Amenti with barley and sand from the mouth of the canal; a shred is made for it with the aid of the shred basin, which is made of barley and sand, in the same way as the god.

This is done in all the nomes of the sixteen divine relics, which are included among the divine nomes.

[B]   UNDERSTANDING THE MYSTERIES OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE KHENTI-AMENTI AND SHENTAYT SANCTUARY GARDEN-TANK.

As for the garden-tank, which is made of greywacke, it is shaped like a basin resting on four supports, 15 as depicted in the drawing. Its length is 1 cubit, 2 palms, its width is 1 cubit, 2 palms, and its internal depth is 3 palms, 3 fingers.

There is a basin beneath it to collect the water that flows from it through a large hole pierced in its centre. It is made of pink granite. Its length is 7 palms, its width is 7 palms.

It bears an engraved design on the outside depicting the work of the garden-tank and the protective gods of Osiris associated with the garden-tank, with a cedar lid placed upon it, in accordance with the model. As for the Khenti-Amenti mould, it is made of gold, with two cavities, and is shaped like a human-faced mummy with a hedjet-crown on its head. Its length is one cubit, including the crown, and its width, at its midpoint, is two palms. There are two holes in each of its sides.

As for the basin of the shred, it is made of black bronze and consists of a double basin, three palms and three fingers long, three palms and three fingers wide, and one palm deep. There is a hole in each of them, likewise. It is placed inside this garden-tank, beneath the elements which are in there. A stone slab inside each basin prevents seepage from escaping through its holes. Place rushes on and under them inside this garden-tank.

As for what is done at Busiris, it is performed on the 12th of Khoiak, in the presence of Shentayt, who resides in Busiris, with 1 hin of barley and 4 hin of sand. Place this in the garden-tank in the same way. Add water daily, ⅓ of a hin, using a golden situla, next to Shentayt, reciting over it the formulas for 20 Pouring the water over the liquids. The guardian deities of the garden-tank protect it until the 21st of Khoiak. Remove it from the garden-tank. Shape it into a mummy with a hedjet-crown, using 1 deben of dried myrrh. Bind with four papyrus cords. Do the same for the basin of the shred. Leave to dry in the sun all day.

Make them sail on the 22nd of Khoiak, at the 8th hour of the day. There are many lamps beside them, as well as the gods who guard them, each god being designated by name: Horus, Thoth, Anubis, Isis, Nephthys, the Children of Horus, and nineteen other gods. Do the same for the thirty-four boats.

Clothe these gods with four cloths from the Southern Sanctuary and the Northern Sanctuary. Place them in the mysterious chapel. Wrap them with the cloth from the Khenti-Amenti of the previous year and with the cloth of the basin of the shred, in the same way. Place inside a sycamore chest engraved with the name of Khenti-Amenti highlighted with green (?) paint. Bury it in the Mound of the nebeh-plants, beneath the venerable balanites, on the last day of Khoiak.

As for what is done at Abydos, it is carried out on the 12th of Khoiak in the same way, near Shentayt, with 1 hin of barley and 3 hin of sand. Place in the two moulds of Khenti-Amenti. Deposit in the garden-tank in the same way. Place rushes under and on top of them. The double basin of the shred is prepared in the same way, with 1 hin of barley and 4 hin of sand. Deposit in the garden-tank in the same way. Cover with a veil; attach a wide collar to it, and place a lapis lazuli flower beside it. Sprinkle it daily with water from the canal bank, using a jug holding 1/12 of a hin, 25 until the 21st of Khoiak.

Remove it from the mould on that day. Add dried myrrh to it in the same way. Bind it with four papyrus cords. Expose it to the sun all day until the 5th hour of the day (?) and place it in the Temple of Sokar. The secret representation of the previous year is buried on the 25th {26th?} of Khoiak. Bury it on the 25th {26th?} of Khoiak in the necropolis.

As for what is done in the White-Wall, it is carried out on the 12th of Khoiak, [similarly to] what is done at Busiris, in all matters. Burial at Rosetau, on the last day of Khoiak. Erect the Djed Pillar.

As for what is done at Coptos, it is carried out on the 12th of Khoiak, just as is done at Abydos in all matters. The activities are performed at the (?) source of the sacred lake in that nome.

As for what is done in the Ombite nome, it is the same as what is done at Coptos, in all matters.

As for what is done at Cusae, it is the same as what is done at Abydos, in all matters.

As for what is done in the Heliopolitan nome, it is the same as what is done at Abydos, in all matters, concerning the Great Prince, in Heliopolis, likewise.

As for what is done at Diospolis Parva, it is carried out on the 12th of Khoiak, likewise as what is done at Abydos, in all matters. The burial takes place at the temple of the mysterious chapel in that place.

As for what is done in the Letopolite nome, it is the same as what is done at Heliopolis, in all matters.

As for what is done at Heracleopolis, it is the same as what is done at Letopolis.

As for what is done at Hermopolis Parva, it is what is done in the mysterious chapel, in all matters.

As for what is done in the Athribite nome, it is the same as what is done at Abydos.

As for what is done at Imau, it is the same as what is done [at] . . .

As for what is done at Bubastis, it is the same as what is done at Heracleopolis.

As for what is done at Sais of Neith, which is entirely different from this, it is performed in the form of a human mummy on a pedestal, crafted by an excellent sculptor . . . . All the rites of the Sanctuary of the Luminous One are performed for it. It is done in the source (?).

This is what is done completely, in all the divine nomes. It is done in . . . in the place that is within it.

[C]   KNOW THE MYSTERY OF THE GREAT WORK MADE WITH THE MOULD OF SOKAR, IN SECRET WORK IN THE HIDDEN HOUSE, AND THE NOMES WHERE THE WORK TAKES PLACE.

As for the mould of Sokar, it is made of gold, with a front mould and a back mould, and is in the form of a mummy with a human face, with its arms placed on its chest, holding a crosier and flail, with a divine wig and uraeus on its head. Its length is one cubit. It is made in a venerated vessel, in this fashion.

List of its components: granular earth (?) from the divine necropolises, 7 khayt with a capacity of ⅓ of a hin; add to it its ⅔ part of date pulp, 4⅔ khayt; add to it ⅓ of dried myrrh, 2 khayt; add to it ¼ of fresh frankincense, 1¾ khayt; add to it ⅙ of all the sweetly scented spices, 1⅙ khayt; add to it 1/42 of all kinds of genuine {precious} stones, ⅙ khayt;   total: 17 1/12 khayt. Add water from the sacred lake, 2½ hin. Shape it into an egg. Place it in a silver vessel. Place sycamore branches 35 around it to keep it soft.

Place it in this mould anointed with sweet moringa oil. Place it on the bed, inside the bed-chamber.

As for what is done at Busiris, the work is carried out there on the 14th of Khoiak. It is placed in this mould on the 16th of Khoiak. It is removed on the 19th of Khoiak. It is left to dry by exposing it to the sun all day. The cloth is made for it on this day. The burial ritual is performed on the 24th of Khoiak. . . . it is buried on the last day of Khoiak, in the crypt that is under the balanites, in the Mound of the nebeh-plants.

As for what is done with it in the Memphite nome, it is the same as what is done at Busiris.

As for what is done with it at Diospolis Parva, it is the same as what is done in the Memphite nome.

As for what is done with it at Cusae, it is the same as what is done in the Memphite nome.

As for what is done in the Athribite nome, it is the same as what is done at Cusae.

[F]   KNOW THE MYSTERY OF THE HIDDEN HOUSE IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE WORK OF THE QUARTER-MOON FESTIVAL IN SECRET, AND WHICH IS ACCOMPLISHED IN THE SANCTUARY OF SHENTAYT, AT BUSIRIS, AT ABYDOS, IN THE MEMPHITE NOME, IN THE OMBITE NOME, IN THE HELIOPOLITE NOME, AT CUSAE, IN THE LYCOPOLITE NOME, IN THE SAITE NOME, 100 AT IMAU, AT DIOSPOLIS PARVA, IN THE PROSOPITE NOME, IN THE LETOPOLITE NOME, AT BUBASTIS, AT HERMOPOLIS PARVA, IN THE ATHRIBITE NOME, IN THE TENTYRITE NOME, IN THE SIXTEEN NOMES OF THE SIXTEEN DIVINE RELICS, IN ALL THE NOMES OF OSIRIS WHERE THE WORK OF THE QUARTER-MOON FESTIVAL OF KHENTI-AMENTI IS DONE.

On the 12th of Khoiak, a festival known as the Festival of Digging the Earth at the Shrine of Shentayt. At the fourth hour of this day, go in procession with the goddess Shentayt, who resides in Abydos at the site of the Festival of Digging the Earth. The barley grains are placed before her on a bed in the bed-chamber of the Shrine of Shentayt. She is unclothed. Place these grains on a cloth before the goddess. Take a khayt measure; take 2 hin of grain from these grains, a hin of the value of 5 deben. Divide it into four parts, making ½ hin per part. Sprinkle with water from the sacred lake, 2½ hin, inside four golden vessels, until the sixth hour of the day. Distribute the contents of these vessels into the right mould of the Khenti-Amenti, one into the left mould of the Khenti-Amenti, another into the right basin of the shred, one into the left basin of the shred, another into the right basin of the shred.

After the sand has been brought, sift it through a rush sieve, ½ hin of a hin of 5 deben. Divide it into four equal portions. Sprinkle with water from the sacred lake, ½ hin, in the same way, into four silver basins. Place one of the portions of barley 105 on top of these portions of sand; mix them together.

The mould on the right side, 1 cubit long, is made of gold.

This is done at Busiris, at Abydos, at Sais, in the Prosopite nome, in . . ., in the Memphite nome, in the Lycopolite nome, at Bubastis, in the Ombite nome, in the Hermopolis Parva nome, in the Heliopolite nome, at Cusae, at Heracleopolis, at Antaeopolis, at Dendera.

After you have brought the mould of the Khenti-Amenti according to the model which is depicted, consisting of two cavities, place a portion of barley mixed with sand inside its right-hand cavity, which has been previously lined with byssus cloth. Place it, filled, in this garden-tak. Put castor-beans under it and on top of it. Proceed similarly for its other left-hand cavity, with one part barley and one part sand in the same way. After it is filled, place it in the garden-tank in the same way. Operate similarly for the double basin of the shred, with the other two parts of barley and two parts of sand. Place it inside the garden-tank in the same way.

Pour water taken from the banks of the canal over them daily, up until the 21st Khoiak. Remove the castor-beans that are on it daily, in order to replace them. Collect the liquid that flows from it in the day's senu-vessel. These castor-beans are taken to the divine necropolis 110 to be buried there. Cover the garden-tank [with a seshed-veil adorned] with a wide collar, each day; place a lapis lazuli flower at its opening on the side. Cover it with a cedar lid. Perform all the rites of the embalming workshop for it daily. Its protection is ensured by the gods of the festival pavilion and the gods who protect the garden-tank, until the 21st of Khoiak.

On this day, remove this god from inside the mould and apply one deben of dried myrrh to each of his parts. Place the two sides one on top of the other. Bind them with four papyrus cords: one to his throat, one to his legs, one to his heart, and one to the ball of his hedjet-crown, so that a human-headed mummy wearing its hedjet crown will emerge, according to this model. Expose it to the sun all day. Proceed similarly for the double basin of the shred, joined into one. Wrap each of them in the ... separate.

On the 22nd of Khoiak, perform for them all the rites of navigation for the day, with these thirty-four boats carrying three hundred and sixty-five lamps.

After they have been placed in the mysterious chapel ... at the appointed time, the Khenti-Amenti of the previous year is brought out, 115 to which the ointment and cloths are applied. Bury it on the 24th of Khoiak. Place it inside a sycamore casket. Do the same for the basin of the shred of [the previous year], which is placed inside a similar casket. Transport it for burial, to Rosetau, on the last day of Khoiak.

As for the mysterious work of the mould of Sokar, which is called Osiris Khenti-Amenti, what concerns it is done on the 12th of Khoiak. At the third hour of this day, display the goddess Shentayt - she who resides in Busiris - at the Place of the Feast of the Digging of the Earth. There is earth in front of her, inside a cedar chest. Place her on a bed, in the bed-chamber, with the headboard to the north; lay her down unclothed. Place this on a piece of cloth, in front of her in a golden basin shaped like a cartouche. Add water from the sacred lake to it. Pass. Take a spoon, measure seven spoonfuls into seven of the utensils that are prescribed, each of which has a capacity of ⅓ of a hin. Put into a silver vessel. Add its ⅔ of date paste, that is 4 ¼ khayt per utensil; its ⅓ of second-quality dried myrrh, that is 2⅓ khayt per utensil; its ¼ of fresh frankincense wrapped in palm fibre, that iskhayt per utensil; its ⅙ ¼ of twelve prescribed spices, 120 that is 1⅙ khayt per utensil; its (?) ¾ of all twenty-four precious stones, that is ⅙ of a khayt per utensil. Add water from the Andjety canal, 1¼ hin per utensil. In total, fourteen objects which are divine relics. Work the material; shape it into an egg; place sycamore branches on it, so that it remains soft. Place inside a silver vessel until the 16th of Khoiak.

At the third hour of that day, display the Great One Who Gives Birth to the Gods. Then, a shorn priest sits on a moringa wood stool before her, covered with a panther skin, with a genuine lapis lazuli clasp on his head. This vessel is placed in his hands, and he says: "I am Horus who comes to you, Mighty One, I bring you these things from my father." The vessel is put on the lap of the Great One Who Gives Birth to the Gods, and then the mould of Sokar is brought, according to this model which is [depicted]. Anoint his body with sweet moringa oil. The contents of this vessel are placed inside. While the front part of the mould is lying on the ground, on a rush mat, the contents of this vessel are placed inside, and the back part of the mould is put on top of it. Then the mould is placed on the bed, in the bed-chamber, 125 inside the cloth-covered pavilion, with his consort gods around him, and all the rites of that day are performed for him.

When the third hour of the day arrives, the back part of the mould is removed and placed on the ground. He is anointed with dried myrrh and water four times until the nineteenth day. Then the god is removed from inside the mould and placed on a golden pedestal. He is exposed to the sun and anointed with dried myrrh and water every day until to the 23rd of Khoiak is reached.

What is called the "Application of Colours" is performed at the third hour of the day. The god is placed on his granite pedestal and the colours are applied. His face is painted yellow ochre, his jaws are turquoise, his eyes are inlaid, his wig is genuine lapis lazuli, and his crosier and flail have the colours of all true precious stones. He is exposed to the sun for two hours.

He is placed in his position inside the cedar chest on the 24th of Khoiak, in the upper chapel, at the ninth hour of the night. Then remove the divine effigy from the previous year. Cut the covering over it; apply the four strips and the ties of the divine shroud. This god is buried there according to all the burial rites, 130 as described in the Book of Burial. He is placed on ... sycamore branches by the door of the hall of Busiris the High, inside the reliquary chest, until the last day of Khoiak arrives. Transport inside the Mound of the nebeh-plants at the ninth hour of the night. It is lowered into the crypt which is beneath the balanites. Enter by the west door; exit by the east door. Walk over this completely secret crypt until the appointed moment arrives.

[G]   KNOW THE MYSTERY THAT IS NOT SEEN OR SPOKEN OF, AND THAT THE FATHER PASSES DOWN TO HIS SON.

A mummy with a human face, wearing the divine wig and the ibes-headdress adorned with the uraeus, and holding the crosier and the flail. His name is engraved in a cartouche: Horus, who puts an end to the slaughter in the Two Lands, king of Upper and Lower Egypt; Osiris, master of Busiris; Wennefer, victorious, he who presides over the West, the great god, master of Abydos.

Date paste, earth, 7 khayt of each, 135 each containing ⅓ of a hin) and equivalent in deben-weight to 3 deben, 3⅓ kite for each; water from the Andjety canal and the sacred lake, 2 ½ hin. Soak the date paste, 3⅓ khayt. Work it thoroughly. Wrap it entirely in sycamore branches to keep it soft. Second-quality myrrh, 4⅔ khayt, or by weight ¼ of each of them, 7½ kite for each. Fresh incense wrapped (?) in palm fibre, 1¾ khayt, or by weight a quarter likewise, ⅛ of a kite for each. Sweet-smelling spices, twelve of which are as follows: sweet reed, 2 kite; cyperus, 2 kite; styrax (?), 2 kite; pine wood, 2 kite; fibrous material {ftt}, 2 kite; Ethiopian rush, 2 kite; refined myrrh (?), 2 kite; aromatic substance {pqr}, 2 kite; mint, 2 kite; sweet pine nuts, 2 kite; 140 juniper berries, 2 kite; black styrax, 2 kite; grind; sift. Twenty-four stones, as follows: gold; silver; carnelian, both white and red; lapis lazuli; Syrian turquoise; raw turquoise; chrysoprase; green stone from the north; marble; red jasper; ṯmḥ-mineral from the land of Nubia; green feldspar; tȝmḥy-mineral; hematite; chrysocolla; galena; raw green rk-mineral; raw serpentinite; amber; obsidian; blond flint; Nubian carnelian. They are ground and placed in a bowl. They are mixed and added to the date paste, 1⅓ khayt. In total, 17 1/12 khayt, broken down as follows: earth, 7 khayt; date paste, ...; myrrh, 2⅓ khayt; frankincense, 1¾ khayt; fragrant spices, 1⅙ khayt; stones, ⅙ khayt.

On the 21st day, the rites are performed consisting of taking the mould outside; it is rubbed 145 with myrrh water four times.

On the 22nd day, the funerary cloth is woven. It is soaked in a mixture of natron, oil, myrrh, and wine until it turns white. The sarcophagus is brought in; the divine substance for dyeing is applied to it. His eyes are made with colours and his hair with lapis lazuli. He is given the shape of an egg; he is worked; he is given the height of the mould of Sokar. A mat is spread out; he is placed on it; the chief ritual priest makes him . . . and places the back part of the mould on him.

On the 15th day, mix the ointment; on the 18th day, cook; on the 19th day, cook; on the 20th day, cook; on the 21st day, cook; on the 22nd day, remove it from the fire.

On the 23rd day, cook the wine reserved for embalming. Purify the cloth. Dry the funerary cloth for the bandages, green . . . and white. Spread out the cloth. Make the funerary cloth for the four bandages. Draw the Children of Horus on it. Make the cloth for the eighty-one bandages, each [of them] . . . Apply the colours, his face in yellow ochre. 150 Draw his eyes like real eyes. His wig and beard are inlaid with lapis lazuli. His temple and hair are coloured turquoise, his limbs entirely yellow ochre. His eyes are rouged with chrysocolla and galena. He is placed on a mat of reed stems; he is on a platform . . . . . . of mulled wine reserved for embalming. He is wrapped in the four bandages made with the funerary cloth. He is anointed with ointment. The . . . is placed on his front part. He is wrapped in a cloth, and anointed with ointment. His amulets, fourteen in number, are placed on him, as is prescribed in the Rule of Embalming: a scarab, a lapis lazuli statuette of Horus. . . . The double basin of the shred is brought. They are joined to the mummy of Khenti-Amenti. The container inscribed for the garden-tank, the one placed opposite them, and the emblems of the garden tub are wrapped in a cloth ... : 1 hin of barley; 4 hin of sand; 2½ 155 hin of water; soak them; rushes, papyrus from around the edge of the pond.
